'Adopt a Beach' program

‘Adopt a Beach’ is a monitoring and cleanup program developed by the Port Lincoln aquaculture industry, based on an agreement made in 2011. The program minimises the impact of debris on the coastal environment.

The program covers 160 km of coastline in the lower Spencer Gulf divided into 15 sites. Local aquaculture companies adopt a stretch of beach and clean up the beach 4 times a year.

Report marine debris

If you find marine debris and it has a potential to cause danger to navigation or the public report sightings to:

  • Fishwatch on 1800 065 522
  • Australian Southern Bluefin Tuna Industry Association on (08) 8682 3257 for marine debris in an 'Adopt a Beach' area.

Map and sites

The ‘Adopt a Beach’ site locations stretch over 160 km of coastline from Cape Euler near Tumby Bay, to Maclaren Point, including Spilsby Island, Boston Island, Grantham Island and Bickers Island.

There are over 10 Eyre Peninsula-based aquaculture companies within these sectors:

  • Southern Bluefin Tuna
  • Finfish
  • Mussel
  • Abalone.

The Tasmanian based plastic fabricator PFG Group Pty Ltd also participates in the ‘Adopt a Beach’ program.

This map shows the Adopt a Beach areas. The table underneath outlines these areas also.
