Fishery Permit - Specimen Shell

Consultation on the proposed fishery permit has now closed.

Feedback was sought on an application for an Exploratory Fishery permit to harvest Specimen Shell in the marine waters of South Australia.

Specimen shells are harvested for:

  • display
  • collection
  • sale.
Divers harvest the shells by hand to minimise potential for damage to the shells. This keeps the shells more valuable.

Commercial harvest of specimen shells has previously been permitted for a small number of fishers, however there are currently no licences permitted to take specimen shells in South Australia.

An Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) risk assessment is part of the assessment process for exploratory or developmental permit applications. The ESD risk assessment has been completed and a draft report was also presented for feedback.
