There are also periodic surveys to make sure labelling requirements are being met.
Country of Origin claims
There are specific requirements about country of origin claims, including:
- Made in Australia
- Product of/ Produced in/ Australia
- Grown in Australia.
Method of production
Australian producers must meet standards if they're claiming certain production methods, including organic and biodynamic. Any producers claiming those production methods should be able to substantiate the claim.
Growers and manufacturers labelling their products as organic or biodynamic follow a voluntary Australian standard (AS 6000-2000). This standard is a reference point for determining if a product is organic.
The DAFF Export Organic Program gives policy advice and verification services to the expert organic and biodynamic sector in Australia. The Export Control (Organic Produce Certification) Orders prohibits the export of organic produce unless an organic produce certificate has been issued under these orders for the produce.
