Healthy and safe workplaces
South Australian food industry workplaces are required to protect workers and other persons against harm to their health, safety and welfare. This is done through the elimination or minimisation of risks arising from work or from specified types of substances or equipment.
Our healthy and safe workplace practices include:
- Setting up a safe workplace with effective Work Health and Safety (WHS) management that demonstrates strong leadership and a commitment from everyone to make the workplace as safe as it can be.
- Consulting with workers about WHS issues to lead to an improved safety culture and outcomes.
- Ensuring that a suitable induction program is in place for new, inexperienced or casual workers so they are aware of the work safety requirements, and their rights and obligations.
- Establishing hazard management which spots the hazard, assesses the risk and fixes it by elimination, or where not possible, minimisation through control measures.
- Ensuring sufficient information and training is provided to workers about particular job hazards and that new workers are correctly inducted and supervised.
- Maintaining a safe workplace through regular safety checks, maintaining workplace equipment and tools and incident/injury reporting processes.
- Ensuring WHS is regularly reviewed and monitored.
