Riverland wineries to receive State Government funding boost

Two Riverland wineries – Byrne Vineyards and Mallee Estate Wines – will receive up to $25,000 each as part of the State Government's new $1 million Cellar Door Grants Program.


The Cellar Door Grants Program assists wineries to upgrade and diversify their cellar doors. This could include adding an exclusive tasting room, bed and breakfast facility or educational program.

As a further boost in funding to the region, the Riverland Wine Industry Development Council will receive $24,000 in funding under the Regional Wine Industry Association Grants Program.

The grant will go toward purchasing five pop-up marquees for use at regional events – promoting the Riverland as one of the world's leading quality warm climate wine regions.

The grant programs are part of the State Government's new $1.8 million per year South Australian Wine Industry Development Scheme which was developed to increase wine sales, visitor numbers and create jobs.

South Australia's wine sector made exceptional gains in 2015-16 – generating almost $2.11 billion in revenue, up almost $330 million on the previous year.

Recent data also shows the State's visitor economy has grown by $800 million in the past year to reach a massive $6.2 billion – the highest on record. South Australia's wine industry contributes significantly to the tourist experience and continues to support growth in this sector.

In total, 44 wineries and nine regional wine industry associations across the State were successful in receiving grants under the South Australian Wine Industry Development Scheme.

The Riverland is South Australia's largest wine grape growing region by volume, with more than 450,000 tonnes of grapes harvested in 2016.

The Cellar Door and Regional Wine Industry Association Grant Programs will help to ensure growth in the State's wine sector and further cement South Australia's reputation as a producer of premium wine.

In 2015-16, South Australia's food and wine sector generated more than $18.6 billion in revenue – and in the 12 months to August 2016 3400 jobs were created. Increasing the funding for this crucial industry means more jobs in our regions.

The benefits of these projects will flow to grape growers, winemakers, individual wine brands, culinary tourism operations, restaurants, food and wine event organisers, and the broader community.

Adelaide's membership in the Great Wine Capitals Global Network provides benefits across the State – promoting all our wine regions on an international stage. The scheme ensures all visitors attracted to South Australia's cellar doors experience the best our vintners have to offer.

Last year, Adelaide was invited to join the global network which also includes San Francisco/Napa Valley (US), Bordeaux (France), Bilbao/Rioja (Spain), Cape Town (South Africa), Mainz/Rheinhessen (Germany), Mendoza (Argentina), Porto (Portugal), Valparaìso/Casablanca Valley (Chile) and Verona (Italy).
