One Biosecurity on the road on the Eyre Peninsula

Monday 25 March 2019

Heard about One Biosecurity but not sure how to sign up?

Livestock SA in association with Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) is hosting a series of workshops across the Eyre Peninsula in early April aimed at assisting producers to connect with One Biosecurity.

The online portal, launched in August last year at the EP Field Days, aims at encouraging and promoting the adoption of good farm practices and risk management across South Australia’s $4.3 million livestock industry.

It was developed by PIRSA in close collaboration with Livestock SA. Over 370 producers representing over 470 farming enterprises have already registered with One Biosecurity.

Livestock SA President Joe Keynes said the system is designed to complement other accreditation programs and ensure producers meet the requirements for a biosecurity plan under the Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) program.

“The key benefits of the program is that it’s free, online and simple for producers to undertake,” Mr Keynes said.

“There is a growing demand for information about on-farm biosecurity practices at all levels of the livestock value chain and this is why we are bringing these workshops to the Eyre Peninsula region so we can help producers to sign up and be connected.

“The feedback we have received from producers who have already signed up to the portal is that they have not only found it easy to use but it also acts as a good reinforcement on why biosecurity is so important to their farm enterprises.”

Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Mary Carr said One Biosecurity brings a level of transparency to livestock trade and a greater level of biosecurity risk management.

“Involvement with an accreditation portal such as One Biosecurity really helps with access to domestic and international premium markets. It really does add value to your enterprise and your reputation in the market. The more producers we get the strong the program becomes and the greater protection it will offer our livestock industry,” she said.

“The portal is also mobile friendly which allows, for example, an accredited producer at a livestock sale to ascertain the biosecurity credentials of a One Biosecurity seller right there in the saleyard,” she said.

“Producers will be able to know just what they’re getting before the animal even steps foot on their property.”
