Keeping declared animals

Animals which are not native to Australia are managed under the Landscape South Australia Act 2019. In South Australia, inside the dog fence, this also includes the dingo and dingo hybrids.

There are restrictions in place for keeping, moving and selling some of these animals because they pose a threat to agriculture, the environment and public safety.

You may need a permit to keep, move or sell them depending on the class of animal. Permits are issued based on your ability to manage the risk associated with keeping animals of high pest potential.

Permits are only issued to facilities that demonstrate extremely high standards of physical security, staff expertise, housing and animal management or facilities that provide a benefit to the community through education.

For a permit to keep an Australian native animal, see Keep, sell or display native animals (Department for Environment and Water).
