Aboriginal Traditional Fishing

Aboriginal Traditional Fishing

Traditional fishing plays an important role in passing down cultural knowledge and allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to continue to participate in cultural practices and customs.

About Aboriginal Traditional Fishing

Traditional fishing is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to connect to Country and is sometimes considered an important social activity. Aquatic resources that are caught provide food for family and community and some are even used for medicinal and ceremonial purposes.

Many South Australian Aboriginal communities have a strong connection and a long history of fishing in both marine and inland waters.

Aboriginal traditional fishing in South Australia is recognised as a distinct and unique class of fishing.

The Government of South Australia recognises the need to progress how we manage South Australia’s fisheries and to include Aboriginal knowledge and involvement of Elders and communities in a way that respects the interests of all fishing sectors.
