Project details

The Kangaroo Island Biosecurity Rebuild Project aims to assist landholders to manage weed threats from the 2019/2020 bushfires. The aim of the Weeds After Fire component of the Biosecurity Rebuild Project is to assist landholders to manage weed threats and build resilience against weeds in the future.

In 2020, the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) offered a weed control equipment subsidy to assist landholders build capacity to manage One-Leaf Cape Tulip (Moraea flaccida) on their property. Twenty-six landholders accessed the subsidy and $53,840 of weed control equipment was purchased.

To create ongoing resilience and capacity for landholders to control weeds on their properties, PIRSA is partnering with Agriculture Kangaroo Island to run a second weed control equipment subsidy.

Amounts

Landholders can choose one of two possible subsidy options:

  1. 60% subsidy for weed wipers/wick wipers to the maximum return value of $5,500 (GST inclusive)
  2. 50% subsidy for spray units, boom sprays, spray equipment attachments, knapsacks, other weed control equipment to the maximum return value of $4,400 (GST inclusive).

Eligibility

The equipment subsidy will be released to Kangaroo Island landholders in two tiers and is restricted to one subsidy per property.

Tier 1

Run dates: 1 January 2023 to 31 May 2023

To qualify for tier 1, you must:

  • be a landholder who is within the fire scar of the 2019/2020 bushfires
  • have not previously received a weeds equipment subsidy from PIRSA
  • have evidence of any of these on your property:
    • pasture weeds
    • fire responsive weeds
    • declared weeds
    • weeds of national significance.

Tier 2

Run dates: 1 March 2023 to 31 May 2023

To qualify for tier 2, you must:

  • have not previously received a weeds equipment subsidy from PIRSA
  • have evidence of these on your property:
    • pasture weeds
    • fire responsive weeds
    • declared weeds
    • weeds of national significance.

How to claim your subsidy

When your application is approved you can claim your subsidy by presenting tax invoices for approved equipment purchases.

We must approve the equipment before you purchase it.

Weed wipers or wick wipersWeed wipers or wick wipers:

  • ideal for treating pasture weeds such as Cape Tulip
  • wicks absorb chemical and wipe across weeds, preventing dripping and only killing target plants.
  • can be towed behind vehicles, tractors, ATVs and quad bikes
  • wings fold up to fit through gates of for easier transport on trailers
  • arms can be adjusted to alter distance from pasture
  • easy to use – add chemical and water mix, pump mix into wicks until soaking wet, set the arms at the appropriate height and go
  • comes in a range of sizes to suit your needs.
