Climate change adaptation

Climate change predicts that extreme weather and seasonal conditions are likely to increase, including:

  • droughts
  • floods
  • extreme heat
  • frosts.

PIRSA is collaborating across government and industry to help the state adapt, prepare, and respond to climate change. This will make South Australia more resilient and prosperous for future generations.

Preparing for climate impacts

PIRSA staff across all divisions use climate information for decisions in the cropping, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture industries. We are working on:

  • productive and resilient field and irrigated crops, including new crops for farming systems
  • adaptable pasture systems and regenerative agriculture
  • emissions reduction in livestock through feed supplements and feed base changes
  • carbon sequestration for forestry production.

See our carbon farming opportunities and roadmap for South Australia.

We are developing and delivering a range of policy, research and projects to:

  • prepare for known climate risks and impacts
  • reduce emissions and waste
  • manage land and aquatic environments for the future.
