As head of Food South Australia, the state’s peak body for local growers, producers and manufacturers, Catherine takes every opportunity to advocate on behalf of the food industry.
She works closely with food businesses, with the Food South Australia team, delivering programs to build their capacity and connections to help them grow.
A focus is to promote local products to markets locally, nationally and internationally.
My career focus on food started when I was at high school with a job washing dishes at Jarmer’s restaurant in Adelaide!
I studied a Bachelor of Business (Marketing), and worked in marketing roles in Melbourne and Adelaide before working with various primary industry-related organisations as a consultant for 15 years.
After six years at the helm of Flavour SA, I worked on the merger with Food Adelaide to create Food South Australia, and was appointed its inaugural CEO in 2010.
I am a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and I have been on a number of government boards, including fisheries and agribusiness councils. I am the Current Chair of the Tropical Tuna management advisory committee (Commonwealth Fishery).
I love working with people in the food industry. They are so passionate about what they do. Many are family-owned businesses with well-recognised brands, and they invest so much time and money into their operations.
The smartest decision I have made was to move from consulting to take on this role. It has given me the opportunity to work with the team to build the organisation from scratch, and to help foster success in our food industry.

I’ve learned that relationships are critical, and with good relationships comes respect. It’s not always easy to keep everyone happy, but you have to aim for it!
My advice is choose a career and industry that you love. It makes it a lot more fun to go to work every day! Always look at how you can do things better and never stop learning.
