The invention of the three-point linkage was a significant step forward for South Australian Agriculture. Harry Ferguson patented the three-point linkage or hitch for agricultural tractors in Britain in 1926. Farm implements such as plows can be hooked on to the three point linkage and pulled and also and lifted clear from the ground. The three points resemble either a triangle, or the letter A. Prior to the invention of the three point linkage, apart from trailed implements, each manufacturer often used their own system for hitching, or attaching their implements to their tractors. Eventually, tractor and implement manufacturers agreed on one standard system to link tractors to implements. As patents on the technology expired, manufacturers were able to refine the system. Today nearly all the manufacturers have adopted what would become the three-point linkage system which was pioneered on the Ferguson tractor.
