Moving pigs

Since 1 February 2018, the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) Pigs has been used in Australia for tracing pig biosecurity, food safety, product integrity, and market access purposes.

Pigs moved within South Australia must be accompanied by a PigPass National Vendor Declaration.

Moving pigs within SA

NLIS pigs requires all pig movements between properties that are not covered by the same PIC to be reported to the PigPass database within 48 hours. This can be done using a PigPass account, available free on the PigPass website, or the PigPass app.

It is the responsibility of the receiver to report the pig movement.

Regardless of how many pigs you move, you must have a movement document (PigPass) that accompanies the pig(s). This includes movements of:

  • a pet pig
  • pigs to other farms or properties where ownership changes
  • pigs to abattoirs, saleyards or showgrounds.

These movement records must be kept for 3 years.

APIQ accredited properties should be aware of the following. Any property to property (P2P) movements of pigs between different PICs, where ownership does not change:

  • do not require a PigPass
  • do not need the pigs to be identified with a tattoo or tag
  • need the movement to be reported to the PigPass database using their APIQ or PigPass account – this is an auditable standard.

Moving pigs to SA from interstate

Pigs will not be allowed to enter from herds where Porcine brucellosis is known or suspected.

In addition, breeding pigs entering SA from Queensland and New South Wales must have a:

If herds from Queensland and New South Wales are not accredited, they must either:

  • have a negative brucellosis serological test result conducted within the previous 30 days
  • be moving to a South Australian facility approved by the Chief Inspector of Stock that carries out brucellosis testing before release.
