We work with businesses and the community to help secure South Australia's reputation as a producer of premium wine.
This includes seeking opportunities for industry development and responding to the increasing global demand for wine in a modern marketplace.
South Australia accounts for almost 80% of the nation's premium wine, produced from some of the oldest vines in the world. We dominate the wine industry with over 700 wineries, which represent just under half of the country's vineyards.
Our capital city, Adelaide, is internationally renowned as Australia's home of gourmet food and wine tourism.
In 2023–24 our wine industry generated $1.81 billion in revenue for South Australia – learn more in the wine toolkit.

No and low (NOLO) alcohol wine
The Government of South Australia’s NOLO Alcohol Program supports the University of Adelaide in establishing a world first trial-scale research facility.
Wine Industry Funds
There are 6 regional wine funds and a statewide fund for grape growers, helping industry to be innovative, adopt best practice, and obtain necessary resources.

SARDI's irrigated crops research provides scientific input for national programs that produce grapes for our premium Australian wines.
Adelaide: Great Wine Capital
South Australia's wine regions make Adelaide a great wine capital and its membership of the Great Wine Capitals network marks South Australia as a leading wine producer globally.
Grape and wine biosecurity
Vinehealth Australia protects SA vineyards from significant pests and diseases, such as phylloxera. This involves:
- providing education and awareness
- developing policy and standards
- ensuring regulatory compliance
- advocating industry research and development.
This independent statutory authority is established under the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Act 1995.
