North West Indigenous Pastoral Project
The North West Indigenous Pastoral Project (NWIPP) in SA’s Far North is returning Indigenous land to commercial primary production. It will:
- improve farming infrastructure
- identify new business opportunities for the region
- create on-the-job skills development and employment for local Indigenous communities
- include cultural and environmental values in property plans.
The project involves 8 important Indigenous owned properties:
- Andamooka, Purple Downs and Roxby Downs Stations (Kokatha Pastoral Pty Ltd)
- Emeroo Station (Bungala Aboriginal Corporation)
- Mount Clarence, Mount Willoughby and Mabel Creek Stations (AMY Nominees Pty Ltd)
- parts of the APY (Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara).
Investment
The State Government, through the Department of Primary Industries and Regions, invested almost $2.9 million to NWIPP since its inception in 2015. A further $2.25 million was committed over 2019-2021.
The project is run in partnership with the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC).
The ILC has provided more than $800,000 in complementary grant funding. It will commit a further $600,000:
- to participant groups to undertake property management planning
- for plant, equipment and infrastructure development to enable land to be brought back into production.
