Introduced and pest animals

Controlling pest animal species

Established pests are introduced animals that severely impact our environment, economy and social amenity.

Our biosecurity division maintains the productivity of our primary industries, protects our natural environments and sustains the health and wellbeing of our communities.

Managing introduced and pest animals

Pest animals cost Australian agriculture billions of dollars each year, causing:

  • competition with livestock and native wildlife
  • contamination or consumption of crops, pasture, and seeds
  • spread of disease and health problems
  • damage to infrastructure and the natural environment.

See the List of declared animals in SA (PDF 329.8 KB), including requirements for managing different species.

PIRSA's Invasive Species Unit and Landscape Boards support primary producers in controlling pest animals and prevent new species from establishing. We deliver policy and technical advice, enforcement activities, and research into innovative control tools that serve the community.
