Planning ahead in flood-risk areas
The River Murray flood of 2022-23 was the third highest ever recorded in our state. Approximately 4,000 hectares of agricultural land and 3,500 private residences were impacted, with severe damage to businesses and infrastructure.
Our flood recovery process involves working with trusts, landholders, and the Department for Environment and Water to dewater and restore farming land. There are programs, services, and funding available to help communities rebuild after flood events.
The State Government's agricultural levee banks along the Lower Murray provide some protection against flooding but cannot withstand excess river waterflows. Primary producers in flood-risk areas should be prepared by:
- developing a business continuity plan
- making and practising an animal emergency plan
- arranging insurance and backing up data
- setting up your property to minimise losses
- packing a survival kit.

We provide financial assistance, mental health support, local mentoring, and business advice for primary producers and regional communities.
There are also opportunities to volunteer or donate to people affected by disaster events, such as storms or floods.
