Cane toad (Rhinella marina)

Terrestrial species not currently found in South Australia.

The cane toad:

  • predates on native species
  • competes for food and habitat.

Poison glands on either side of the head can harm native predators.

Declared species under the Landscape South Australia Act 2019. It may not be held, traded or released in South Australia without specific authorisation. Report any cane toad to National Pest Alert Hotline (Freecall): 1800 084 881.

Characteristics:

  • Large, up to 20 cm
  • Heavy build with shortish legs
  • Rough warty skin
  • Usually tan dark green or brownish in colour
  • Prominent sharp-edged ridge about the eye
