Forestry Centre of Excellence

South Australia's Forestry Centre of Excellence (FCoE) is acknowledged as an international leader in forest industries research, education, and product and market development, enhancing the Green Triangle region through built local capacity, national collaboration and reputation.

The FCoE is a collaborative project between the Government of South Australia, Adelaide University and the forest industry. The Government of South Australia and Adelaide University are contributing $16 million and $6.55 million respectively over 10 years.

The FCoE is responding to short and long term industry needs by supporting value-adding through innovation and local capability development including investment in education pathways.

The centre:

  • develops and builds on its existing research capability in the region providing a hub for greater strategic focus
  • enhances innovation and supports new investment through stronger industry partnerships
  • strengthens and brokers skill development across industries for a future focused workforce.

The centre's purpose-built facility in Mount Gambier opened in 2026, marking a major milestone in the South Australian Government’s long-term commitment to strengthening the state’s forest and timber industries.

The facility also accommodates the Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub and Tree Breeding Australia, strengthening collaboration across research, education and industry and reinforcing Mount Gambier’s role as a national centre for forestry innovation.
