Freshwater species not currently found in South Australia.

Alligator Gar is a large freshwater species that can grow to more than 1.5m long. It has the potential to prey on most native fish species.

What to look for:

  • large species up to 1.8m in length
  • garfish appearance (hence the name)
  • large teeth visible along snout
  • short broad snout
  • usually brown to lighter grey.

Report suspected exotic species and diseases

Early detection is important to stop the establishment and spread of aquatic pests and diseases.

Report unusual sightings immediately, including mass fish die-off.
