Roach (Rutilus rutilus)

Freshwater species found in South Australia. Established in some freshwater waterways, including the River Murray, Roach is a medium-sized species that competes with native species for food.

Declared noxious under the Fisheries Management Act 2007. Noxious species are a severe threat to the natural environment and industries. They cannot be held or traded in South Australia without specific authorisation and must not be returned to the water if caught.

Characteristics:

  • Silvery olive-green or dull-bluish top, with bright silvery sides, and a white belly
  • Orange to red pectoral, pelvic, and caudal fin
  • Relatively deep body with a high-arched back, small head and mouth, strongly forked tail, and bright red eyes
  • Maximum length reported is 50 cm but the average size is 25 cm
