The smooth newt competes for food and habitat with native species.
Declared species under the Landscape South Australia Act 2019. It may not be held, traded or released in South Australia without specific authorisation.

Characteristics:
- Up to 10 cm length, head to tail
- Pale brown to yellow in colour
- Males have 1 black line running down the centre of the spine
- Females have 2 lines
