H5 bird flu testing update 11 August

South Australia has a further 33 suspected H5 bird flu cases following testing of samples in Adelaide.

There are no new confirmed cases today, with detections remaining at 163 in South Australia. The number of suspect cases is now 84.

The additional 33 suspect cases of H5 bird flu detected since the last update include:

  • 1 peregrine falcon
    • Kohinoor, Kangaroo Island
  • 11 silver gulls
    • Limestone Coast – Carpenter Rocks [3], Middleton [1], Robe [1] and Port MacDonnell [6]
  • 21 greater crested terns
    • O’Sullivan Beach [1]
    • Kangaroo Island – Brown Beach [1], Seal Bay [6] and D’Estrees Bay [1]
    • Limestone Coast – Robe [2], Cape Jaffa [1], Port MacDonnell [6], Carpenter Rocks [1], Padthaway [1] and Pelican Point [1].

The samples have been sent to ACDP for confirmatory testing with results expected to be known in the coming days.

There remains no H5 bird flu detections in poultry or other livestock. The risk to human health of H5 bird flu remains low.
