H5 bird flu testing update 21 September

There are 4 new confirmed H5 bird flu event in South Australia since yesterday’s update.

There have now been 318 confirmed H5 bird flu events in South Australia.

The Australian sea lions were identified through proactive aerial wildlife surveillance operations along the state’s coastline and offshore islands, as part of the South Australian Government’s H5 bird flu response.

A large number of deceased greater crested terns was also identified on The Pages Islands, which has been recorded as a continuation of a previously confirmed H5 bird flu positive event.

In line with national protocols, the South Australian Government reports H5 bird flu detections as events, rather than individual animal detections. An event may involve one or more animals.

There are currently no H5 bird flu detections in poultry or other livestock. The risk to human health from the virus remains low.

South Australians are encouraged to continue being vigilant in reporting sick and dead birds and other wildlife.

The public are reminded to contact their vet if they have concerns regarding their pets and H5 bird flu.
