Locust crackdown continues with aerial spraying in Mid North and Flinders Ranges

The Malinauskas Government has begun targeted aerial locust control operations in the Flinders Ranges and Mid North, as part of a comprehensive statewide plague locust response.

Recent surveillance has identified significant locust activity north of Port Augusta, around Hawker and across parts of the Flinders Ranges, including large hopper bands.

By hitting locust populations early, before they develop into flying swarms, control efforts will more effectively reduce the risk to crops, pastures and neighbouring properties.

Aerial treatments are being carried out in remote pastoral areas where locust populations commonly build up. Operations are only undertaken where locust numbers reach treatment thresholds and where they can be conducted safely and responsibly.

The Malinauskas Government is taking action on locusts through its $6.5 million plague locust response package, helping to protect South Australia's strong crop and pasture season.

The package includes a $4.6 million Chemical Rebate Scheme to support landholders undertaking locust control and give them the flexibility they need to choose and use the pest control chemicals that are right for them.

Eligible producers can claim up to $35 per hectare sprayed (excluding GST) for approved locust control products through the rebate scheme.

Landholders should report locust activity to the Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881.
