Strong eID uptake backed by new resources for producers
Tuesday 11 August 2026 BiosecurityPrimary industriesMedia release
South Australian sheep and goat producers can learn how to make the most of electronic identification (eID) through a new suite of practical resources through the eID Advantage Program.
Developed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA), the videos and producer case studies showcase how eID can strengthen traceability, safeguard market access, enhance supply chain assurance, and unlock productivity gains on-farm.
Their release comes as South Australia's eID rollout continues to gain momentum, with producers demonstrating strong uptake since the program commenced in July 2023 ahead of full implementation of Australia’s national sheep and goat eID system from 1 January 2027.
Backed by more than $17.5 million in State and Commonwealth Government investment, the first stage of the eID Implementation Program (2023–2025) delivered substantial financial and practical support to industry, including tag rebates and essential equipment funding across saleyards, processing facilities, producer groups, agricultural shows and schools.
Building on this success, Stage 2 of the program commenced on 1 July 2025 as part of the Drought Support Package, providing a further $4.5 million investment to help producers purchase eID tags at a discounted rate of up to 47.5 cents per tag through to 30 June 2027.
Since 1 January 2024, over 12 million tags have been purchased under the Point of Sale Tag Discount, equating to $9.372 million of assistance to South Australian primary producers.
In partnership with Livestock SA and Meat and Livestock Australia, the eID Advantage Program is helping producers build the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to maximise the benefits of eID on-farm. Program activities have so far included:
- Delivery of more than 60 workshops, webinars, train-the-trainer activities, field days and regional events to build eID capability across the supply chain, including producers, saleyards, processors, agents, agricultural shows and schools.
- Engaged producers through a 12-month The Future's Ear advertising campaign, promoting awareness, compliance requirements, the benefits of eID, and available rebates and support.
- Supported 8 eID Producer Groups involving 105 producers, delivering strong peer-to-peer learning outcomes and improving understanding of National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) requirements and obligations, capability in data collection and on-farm application of eID technology.
- Trained 158 eID Champions across the livestock supply chain to support industry
adoption and knowledge sharing. - Produced 10 producer case studies showcasing practical on-farm uses of eID, available in both digital and print formats.
South Australian producers are encouraged to view the new traceability videos and case studies and access the full suite of eID resources and support available.
