Prepare now for spring hatchings of plague locusts

The risk of plague locust activity has risen significantly across parts of South Australia following favourable seasonal conditions. Increased egg laying and high locust numbers across some regional areas and neighbouring states to the east are expected to drive activity this spring.

Locusts are highly mobile pests that can cause significant damage to a wide range of vegetation, including crops, vineyards, orchards, horticultural crops, pastures and other agricultural production systems when populations build to high levels.

Current forecasts indicate:

• Flinders Ranges and Mid North: Moderate to high chance of high locust numbers, with initial hatching expected from 11-20 September.
• Riverland and Mallee: Moderate to high chance of high locust numbers, with initial hatching expected from 11-30 September.
• Upper / Western Eyre Peninsula: Possible chance of localised high locust numbers, with initial hatching expected from 11-30 September

For industry suppliers and advisers

As trusted advisers to primary producers, chemical suppliers, resellers and agronomists play an important role in supporting preparedness and early management efforts.

Please help by:

• Advising clients about the Locust Chemical Rebate Scheme.
• Reviewing stock levels and supply arrangements to ensure suitable locust control products are available should demand increase.
• Ensuring recommendations align with products registered or permitted by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) for each landholder situation.
• Reminding clients to follow all label directions and permit conditions and seek advice from an agronomist, chemical supplier, PIRSA or another suitably qualified adviser where required.

For landholders

Landholders are encouraged to:

• Monitor paddocks, roadsides and bare ground for signs of egg beds and hoppers.
• Review chemical and pest management plans now and treat early if required.
• Report any locust activity to PIRSA.
• Check eligibility for the Locust Chemical Rebate Scheme.

Early action at the hopper stage provides the best opportunity to reduce locust numbers before they become mobile adult swarms.
