Supporting producers to reduce grazing pressure
Friday 20 February 2026 Primary industriesDrought support
Primary producers can now access increased financial support to help reduce grazing pressure from high numbers of starving kangaroos on their properties.
Following several good seasons, kangaroo populations across South Australia have risen to more than five million. The drought has left many of these animals starving, and they are causing significant damage to crops, pastures and native vegetation.
Producers can access a kangaroo removal incentive, which has now been increased from $5 to $7 per animal.
This increase aligns payments for landholders with those available to commercial harvesters and recognises the costs involved, including labour, fuel and ammunition.
The updated rate will apply from 20 February 2026 and remain in place until program funds are exhausted. Producers will still be required to provide necessary evidence to ensure removals occur on permitted properties and maintain the integrity of the program.
The Reducing Grazing Pressure through Kangaroo Management Program is led by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions in partnership with Landscape Boards, the Department for Environment and Water, and industry stakeholders.
