Regional health and retirement living boost in the Riverland
Thursday 8 October 2026 RegionsMedia release
The Albanese and Malinauskas Governments are delivering a $3 million boost for regional health and retirement living in the Riverland, supporting expanded medical services in Renmark and a bigger retirement village in Loxton.
Under a joint agreement with the Malinauskas Government, the Albanese Government is investing $12.7 million to support regional jobs and industries in South Australia’s River Murray communities, as part of Round 1 of the Sustainable Communities Program.
The Albanese Government will provide $2.2 million to support the construction of 22 new two-bedroom units at the Loxton Retirement Village. Designed to address a local housing shortage for older residents, the Future Ready: Riverland Growth Project will be delivered by the District Council of Loxton Waikerie.
A further $829,000 will be invested in the Sustainability Uplift Project, which will expand multi-disciplinary health services offered in the Renmark Paringa council area through an upgrade of the Renmark Medical Clinic.
This funding will support the clinic to undertake a customised renovation and fit-out of an adjacent building, expanding capacity to recruit more doctors and rural student placements, provide more health services, and treat more patients.
The South Australian Sustainable Communities Program is a Commonwealth-funded program supporting community- and industry-led projects aimed at mitigating the potential social or economic impacts of water recovery under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
This program has also delivered $3.5 million to a range of investment-ready projects and feasibility studies that will benefit primary producers in the region, with more successful projects to be announced soon.
Each project has been assessed and approved for funding by the Malinauskas Government through the state’s Department of Primary Industries and Regions.
