Soil analysis probe – Goanna Ag, GoField

This case study was developed by PIRSA’s AgTech Program (2021–2025). PIRSA does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or currency of the information provided, nor does it constitute endorsement. Please confirm details with the respective vendor.

GoField analyses soil properties to help growers with crop management decisions.

Benefits

Goanna Ag's technology is useful to:

  • determine optimal irrigation scheduling
  • assess the effectiveness of irrigation after application.

It can also monitor pasture growth during spring by assessing the temperature and moisture content of soils.

How it works

The GoField provides real-time information on soil moisture levels through the 80cm capacitance soil moisture probe.

With the use of GoSat Analytics, it measures current water use and forecasts crop water requirements for the next 10 days, for an individual paddock.

Data is communicated hourly and is accessible via computer, phone or tablet.

Installation and power

The probe can be self-installed, or fitted by a Goanna Ag field technician using a specialised hand auger, reflective of the soil profile.  This provides optimum soil contact and minimises the displacement of soil. The probe is placed into the ground, and the box is mounted onto a 3m high pole.

Power is supplied by a battery.

Connectivity requirements

The GoField is compatible with 3G or 4G, LoRaWAN, and Cat M1.

Pricing model

There is an upfront cost with ongoing subscription costs.
