Building the SA-NSW dog fence

In 2019, the NSW Government proposed to extend their Wild Dog Fence for 322 km down the SA-NSW border towards the Murray River. By May 2025, 32 km had been completed, which closed the gap between the NSW Wild Dog Fence and the new alignment of the SA Dog Fence.

In June 2025, the SA Dog Fence Board and NSW Government signed an agreement  that will see the Dog Fence Board build up to 290 km along the SA-NSW border. PIRSA will manage the build of the fence, using the same materials and designs as used in the rebuild of the SA Dog Fence.

Planning for the build of the fence is already underway, and it is hoped building the fence will commence either late 2025 or early 2026. The build of the SA-NSW fence is expected to be completed by June 2030, after which it will be declared a Dog Fence under the Dog Fence Act 1946.

This fence will further protect the SA sheep industry by stopping wild dogs from crossing from NSW. The fence will also prevent the movement of feral goats and feral pigs into pastoral and riverland country.

The commitment of the Dog Fence Board to build 290 km of fence demonstrates continued commitment to the SA sheep industry and collaboration with NSW. The SA sheep industry has been buoyed by the rebuild of the Dog Fence in SA. More than 35,000 sheep have returned to paddocks that could not previously be grazed due to wild dog attacks.
