Transforming South Australia’s timber industries and enhancing our lives

Overview

South Australia’s timber industry continues to transform, driven by innovation, sustainability, and strategic collaboration between government and industry stakeholders. Through targeted investments and a comprehensive master plan, the state is enhancing its timber sector to deliver products across housing, food packaging, and logistics – while positioning itself as a leader in low-carbon, circular economies.

Innovation and value-added timber processing

The transformation is rooted in the ambition to move beyond traditional timber extraction, toward a future where value-added processing supports everyday Australian life. Timber is no longer seen only as merely a raw material for construction; it is a versatile solution contributing to multiple sectors:

  • Building and construction: Engineered timber products are being used in housing, mid-rise buildings, and fencing.
  • Food packaging: Renewable timber resources now serve as eco-friendly alternatives to plastic in items like paper bags, wooden cutlery, and containers.
  • Logistics: Timber plays a critical role in increasing freight efficiency through pallets, crates, and packaging solutions to get food from our farms to our plates.

Collaboration and strategic planning

A key enabler of this transformation is the South Australian Wood Fibre and Timber Industry Master Plan developed as a partnership between the South Australian Government and forest industries. This framework is supporting $2 million of projects that deliver high impact for the state’s industry, economy and environment, including the electric log truck trial.

Electric log truck trial – a sustainable leap forward

Transporting logs is a fuel-intensive part of the timber supply chain, traditionally reliant on diesel-powered trucks that contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. As pressure grows for industries to cut carbon and meet sustainability targets, it’s essential to explore cleaner, more efficient alternative. An electric log truck trial is showing promising results to help decarbonise forestry logistics. The trial is evaluating multiple dimensions:

  • Emissions reduction: carbon emissions compared to diesel trucks
  • Operational efficiency: assessing battery range and required charging stations
  • Economic viability: potential for long-term carbon emissions savings.

Planning for future fibre demand

To ensure long-term sustainability and economic resilience,  a modelling project is underway to better understand the future wood fibre supply and demand profile, exploring evolving needs for both industrial and household uses. A report on the modelling is anticipated to inform strategic decisions around:

  • Expanding local manufacturing capacity
  • Increasing the diversity of fibre-based products
  • Supporting investment in plantation growth and fibre innovation
  • Greater reuse and recycling of timber, such as copper chrome arsenate (CCA) treated timber.

South Australia’s transformation of its forest industries is a bold example of how traditional sectors can embrace innovation and sustainability to meet the needs of modern society. By aligning government policy and support, industry-led ideas and investment, the state is creating a future where wood fibre not only supports homes and businesses but also drives environmental stewardship and economic growth in a global, green economy.
