Crop Watch 2 September 2024

SARDI Crop Watch

Wheat stripe rust

In the last week, SARDI Cereal Pathology has received reports of wheat stripe rust across the state, including from the Lower North, Upper Yorke Peninsula, Upper Eyre Peninsula, Mallee and South East, in these susceptible varieties:

  • Calibre
  • Rockstar
  • Dozer CL Plus
  • DS Bennet
  • SVS variety Sherriff CL Plus
  • MSS variety Scepter.

Stripe rust is being reported later this season than in the previous two, so the risk of it becoming a serious issue is much lower. Stripe rust thrives at 8° to 15°C in damp and wet conditions so spring conditions will determine the rate of disease spread.

Growers are encouraged to monitor paddocks for stripe rust and implement fungicide regimes where necessary.

Please send your rust samples to the Australian Cereal Rust Survey to contribute to ongoing research and monitoring.

You can use the StripeRustWM management app as a support tool. It uses a forecasting model to help you make fungicide application decisions and suggests likely economic returns.
