Brian Hughes

Biography

Brian is an experienced leader of soil, land management and sustainable agricultural projects across SA, some with national involvement. He has recognised technical skills in soil science including soil acidity, salinity, fertility, erosion control, soil constraints and soil survey and land capability.

He is the current project leader of several GRDC and DEW funded projects on soil acidity and health and has mostly worked for PIRSA since 1982 in a range of country locations in SA. He has worked across soil issues in a cropping, grazing , dairying, annual and perennial horticultural systems.

Research interests

  • Soil heath issues including managing soil acidity, carbon, fertility, salinity, subsoil constraints and water repellency
  • Developing sustainable farming systems and over coming and reducing erosion linked to land use, drought, fires and flooding
  • Soil and land capability issues including land suitability, soil data, regional soil and landscape mapping, land used planning and conflict and improving production on particular soil types using various soil amendments
  • On farm water supplies and methods of improving runoff, capture, storage and distribution on farms
