Dr Peter Hayman

Biography

Peter Hayman leads SARDI Climate Applications which links the advances in climate science to primary industries in southern Australia. He started his career as an agricultural extension officer and moved into applied research. He has worked to maintain a two-way communication between farmers and science.

His 35-year career spans science communication, the science-policy interface, project management and applied research. He has been awarded grants from GRDC, MLA, Wine Australia, Horticulture Australia, SA Premier’s Science Research Fund, South Australian River Murray Research Program, ACIAR and the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Rural R&D for Profit.

In 2022 he was a contributing author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Australasian chapter in the sixth assessment report. He is on the national team of the GRDC RiskWi$e project and works closely with climate science from the Bureau of Meteorology and CSRIO.

Over the last decade he has provided annual guest lectures to the University of Adelaide and Melbourne University.

  • The application of seasonal climate forecasting to farm level decisions
  • Impacts and adaptation of South Australian primary industries to climate change with an emphasis on low rainfall cropping and high value horticulture and viticulture
  • Farming systems approaches to managing climate risk
