Mice baiting

When using poison baits it is a legal requirement under the Agricultural and Veterinary Products (Control of Use) Act 2002 to:

  • use registered or permitted bait products only
  • follow label instructions
  • not possess or use home-made baits.

There are a number of registered bait products available to control mice.

For mice baits suitable for the home and urban areas, contact your local chemical retailer or hardware store.

For broadacre cropping areas, zinc phosphide (ZnP25) is available.

Emergency permit

An emergency mouse bait permit (PER97414) allows for the supply and use of zinc phosphide (ZnP50) at 50 g/kg to manage mouse outbreaks in broadacre cropping areas.

This permit is in effect from 18 May 2026 to 15 December 2026.

Zinc phosphide can only be used in broadacre crop settings. It cannot be used for domestic or urban settings.

Strict conditions apply for the use of ZnP50 under this permit: you must complete Grain Producers Australia (GPA) training before you can purchase the product – see ZP50 mouse bait access and reporting.

Use is also limited to declared areas with moderate to high mouse activity and there must be clear evidence of high mouse numbers at the specific site before application.

To minimise risks to non-target species, there are requirements around how the product is applied.

Users must keep records of use and report any issues or unintended impacts they observe.
