Dr Roger Kirkwood
Biography
Dr Kirkwood has experience in fisheries and marine ecosystem management research in Australia, Antarctica, South America and the Netherlands. Starting his career in field geology, he was drawn to biochemistry, then zooplankton research, fisheries management, wildlife management, seal and seabird ecology, and human processes that interact with marine species.
His career has been a series of contracts with agencies such as Anaconda Australia, Electrolytic Zinc Company, University of Tasmania, CSIRO Fisheries & Oceanography, Tasmanian Sea Fisheries, Australian Antarctic Division, Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife, Aurora Expeditions, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Victorian Government, Wageningen Marine Research (in the Netherlands), and since 2020, he has been full-time with the Marine Ecosystems team at SARDI Aquatic & Livestock Sciences.
Dr Kirkwood has research links with many research institutes, universities, government departments and private industries in Australia and overseas. He has co-authored more than 80 peer reviewed papers, several books and book chapters, and numerous technical reports, and has co-supervised 2 PhD, 3 Masters, and 7 Honours students.

- Mitigating negative outcomes from interactions between fisheries and cetaceans, seals and seabirds
- Population and foraging ecology of marine mammals and seabirds
- Understanding impacts of human-driven processes on marine species and ecosystem
