Draft sector-based aquaculture strategy for oysters
Consultation closed
We sometimes seek industry feedback on draft aquaculture strategy for the South Australian oyster sector.
The strategy aims to ensure potential adverse effects on the environment resulting from day-to-day farming practices and other aquaculture related conduct are avoided, remedied or mitigated where possible.
When approved, the sector-based aquaculture strategy for oysters immediately replaces individual aquaculture strategies used by licence holders in the oyster sector. A licensee of the oyster sector will be required by the Aquaculture Regulations 2016 (regulation 19) to adopt the sector-based aquaculture strategy and ensure activities carried out under their individual aquaculture licence areas conform with it.
PIRSA and the South Australian Oyster Growers Association (SAOGA) developed the draft sector-based aquaculture strategy for oysters with input from other key state government agencies, including the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) and the South Australian Environment Protection Authority (EPA). This strategy does not vary or exempt the oyster sector from legislative requirements, but incorporates relevant legislation applicable to aquaculture and operational practices of the oyster sector.
