Fisheries allocations

Allocation of fisheries resources for the commercial, recreational, and Aboriginal traditional fishing sectors in SA are provided in fisheries management publications.

The relevant management plans and PIRSA's Allocation Policy ( PDF 500.4 KB ) outline how we set and review fishing allocations. See this process in the Fishing allocation flow chart ( PDF 358.6 KB ).

Data assessment

Data used in setting, monitoring, and assessing allocations should be real, recent, and reliable. It may be sourced:

  • from SARDI, through fisheries reports and modelling
  • through external platforms recognised by PIRSA, such as social and economic data from BDO or EconSeach.

The data's accuracy, in the context of its collection and application, should be indicated and taken into consideration during assessment.

Allocations are monitored against total catch, as this information is readily available. Any apparent breaches of the allocation will trigger an assessment, and the sector or fishery catch is reviewed against recommended biological catch (RBC) or proxy.

Allocation review process

There is a 2-stage approach to reviewing allocations. The first stage is a preliminary assessment, which determines whether the second stage is necessary, involving a full allocation assessment.

The first stage is undertaken by a working group, established on an as needs basis. Members include:

  • Chair – PIRSA
  • representatives of each fishery with a set share of the species to be reviewed
  • PIRSA fisheries management expert
  • SARDI fisheries science expert.

The second stage is conducted by the Allocation Review Committee (ARC), which was established in 2023 by the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development under the Fisheries Management Act 2007.
