Sheep and goat eID essential equipment rebate (AgShows and events)

To assist with the implementation of electronic identification (eID) for sheep and goats, South Australian agricultural show (AgShows) and event organisers can apply for a rebate on the costs of scanning equipment to assist in the recording of individual movements of electronically identified sheep and goats on the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) database.

Key dates

Applications close on 30 June 2026 at 5 pm.

If you are preparing a needs analysis, this must be completed and submitted to PIRSA by 30 April 2025.

Amounts

Organisers of AgShows and events can apply for 75% of the cost of eligible essential equipment:

  • Stick or wand reader (1 maximum)

Payments will be made on a reimbursement basis upon presentation of paid invoices for approved expenditure. Proof of purchase and payment (official tax invoices and receipts) will be required to be submitted.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet all the criteria below:

  • be based in South Australia
  • have an active sporting event NLIS database user account registered to their organisation
  • the property where the AgShow or event is being held must have a showground PIC
  • be involved with the movement of sheep or goats onto site for an AgShow or event as an event organiser (for example: exhibiting, sheep dog trials, shearing competitions or displays, farm animal nursery, animals used for equipment displays or demonstrations)
  • hold an active Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • be a legal entity capable of entering into a grant agreement with the Minister
  • not have received funding from another South Australian or Federal Government program for the same activities.

Only 1 application can be lodged per AgShow or event organiser.

Ineligible to apply

  • Organisers of AgShows or events that do not involve movement of sheep or goats (not brought onto site)
  • Livestock agents including those running events or acting on behalf of AgShows or events to manage NLIS requirements (separate funding is available to assist agents))
  • Sheep and goat producers
  • Saleyards
  • Feedlots
  • Exporters
  • Export depots
  • Processors
  • South Australian Government agencies
  • Local councils

Ineligible equipment, infrastructure and activities

  • Equipment purchased prior to 8 June 2023
  • Applicators and tags
  • Weigh crates
  • Scale indicators
  • Software
  • Training
  • Cost of installation of equipment and/ or retrofitting undertaken by a staff member of the applicant
  • Structural modifications
  • Ongoing operational, maintenance or replacement costs for equipment of infrastructure
  • Any equipment for enhancing performance management (for example: autodrafters)
  • Second hand equipment
  • Freight

If an applicant requires scanning equipment different to the above, the applicant may prepare and submit a needs analysis to PIRSA outlining their essential equipment requirements and rationale for why the equipment is needed including how it will enable them to meet the regulatory obligations under the NLIS for sheep and goat movements for AgShows and events – refer to Section 9 of the guidelines for more details.

Complete the application form ( DOCX 87.8 KB ) and email it to PIRSA.GrantsEnquiries@sa.gov.au.

You will need to include copies of:

  • tax invoices
  • evidence of payment (for example: bank statements, supplier statements, paid invoices).

What happens next

You will receive a receipt number upon submitting the online form. Submitting an application does not guarantee approval of a rebate.

Application outcomes will be advised in 4 to 6 weeks.
