Peter Gago, AC

Peter Gago is a former chemistry and mathematics teacher turned winemaker – and only the fourth custodian of Penfold’s Grange.

He joined the winemaking team at Penfolds in 1989, after graduating as dux from Roseworthy College, and quickly became Penfolds red wine oenologist. In 2002, he became Penfolds chief winemaker.

Spending the first half of each year working across wineries to vineyards, Peter ensures that Penfolds viticultural practices are world-class and continues to increase his understanding of the nuances of each vineyard and region.

Post-harvest, he enthusiastically embarks on his other role as an ambassador and educator. In high demand internationally, Peter relishes bringing Penfolds wines to the world. The exposure keeps him sharp, enthused and well-versed in world wine styles.

In 2017, Peter was appointed as a Companion of The Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for eminent service to the Australian wine industry as an internationally acclaimed winemaker, to the global promotion of excellence in winemaking, viticulture, marketing and research as a mentor to young oenologists and the community of South Australia.

Peter is also the co-author of five books about wine, and is Global Ambassador for the Adelaide Great Wine Capitals Global Network.
