Illegal King George whiting take detected

Tuesday 29 August 2023

PIRSA Fisheries Officers have detected two fishers on the Yorke Peninsula for exceeding the daily boat limit of King George Whiting.

The two men were observed fishing in the morning from one vessel before taking another vessel on a second fishing trip later in the day. Subsequent execution of a search warrant at a nearby property led to the seizure of 50 King George Whiting, with some buried to avoid detection.

The boat limit for King George Whiting when three or more people are fishing on board is 30. Exceeding the limit means the two men can be fined up to a maximum of $20,000 if found guilty.

Fishers are reminded to be aware of fishing related rules before they go fishing, including species they are likely to catch and whether an intended fishing location is subject to any closures or restrictions.

Illegal or suspicious fishing activity can be reported via the SA Fishing app or by calling the 24 hour Fishwatch number, 1800 065 522. Callers can speak to a Fisheries Officer and remain anonymous.
