Illegal mulloway fishing detected

Thursday 27 July 2023

The public is being asked for assistance to apprehend fishers responsible for the illegal taking of 250 kilograms of large mulloway yesterday at Port Wakefield.

PIRSA Fisheries Officers discovered the illegal catch dumped in the mangroves at Port Wakefield. The fish are believed to be part of an illegal netting operation that risks the sustainability of mulloway in the area.

The Fisheries Officers were unable to locate the offenders, who did not return to the area. They encourage anyone who may have any information relating to this offence, or any illegal fishing activities to make a report via the Recreational Fishing smartphone app or by calling the 24-hour Fishwatch number, 1800 065 522. Callers can speak to a Fisheries Officer and remain anonymous.

The dead mulloway will not be wasted but used for research to better understand this prized fish species.
