Kangaroo Island Biosecurity Rebuild Project

The Kangaroo Island Biosecurity Rebuild Project aims to limit biosecurity threats triggered by response and rebuild activities from the 2019–20 bushfires on Kangaroo Island.

Bushfire response and rebuild activities have increased the risks of new biosecurity threats, including:

  • weed seeds in fodder and on machinery
  • spread of livestock diseases
  • exposure to honeybee pests and diseases.

This project is jointly funded for $3.77 million by the South Australian and Australian Governments under National Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. It is delivered in partnership with the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board, farmers, landholders and stakeholders.

Program initiatives

The project is designed to complement existing programs on Kangaroo Island, including initiatives of:

See details below of all initiatives and activities identified for this project.

Animal health

Activities that will support animal health on Kangaroo Island include:

  • on farm visits to producers to assist with livestock movements, animal health issues and limiting spread of disease arising from bushfire
  • on farm disease and parasite surveillance and diagnostics activities
  • support for primary producers to develop farm biosecurity plans and gain One Biosecurity accreditation
  • support for primary producers to understand their National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) obligations.

Soil and land management

Activities that will support soil and land management on Kangaroo Island include:

  • improving and maintaining soil and land management for primary producers
  • developing extension resources that will become legacy items of the project.

Phytophthora

The Phytophthora (root rot) project aims to prioritise and determine appropriate steps to manage and survey Phytophthora (Pc) in the fire scar.

The project will provide advice to people undertaking fieldwork on practical measures to minimise the risk of spreading Phytophthora on Kangaroo Island.

Weed management

Activities that will support weed management on Kangaroo Island include:

  • a weeds after fire project to help landholders identify and reduce weeds
  • establishing a local advisory group to prioritise control of high-risk weeds
  • implementing a weed surveillance program to identify alert weeds and other high risk weeds using the SA Weed Risk Assessment System
  • controlling new and existing weeds that have significantly expanded their population size and extent post-fire including on unmanaged crown land.

Biosecurity and machinery hygiene

Activities that will support biosecurity and machinery hygiene on Kangaroo Island include:

  • increased biosecurity compliance officers and information at ferry and airport terminals.
  • partnering with the transport industry both on and off island to manage biosecurity risks and compliance.
