Chicken meat
South Australia's chicken meat industry has recently shown marked growth and has become a substantial chicken meat processer. Around 89 million chickens were processed in South Australia in 2013-14, 15% of the national total.
South Australian production has doubled in the last 10 years with more than 80,000 tonnes of processed chicken meat sent to other Australian states.
National poultry processors Ingham Enterprises and Baiada Poultry have modern breeding, hatching and processing facilities in South Australia, and together with SA-based Gourmet Poultry, they have expanded their processing volumes substantially since 2004.
With South Australia's export processors now offering certified free-range and welfare-accredited chicken meat, new opportunities for export into premium markets are likely.
